India’s leading marine experts will deliver talks on role of fisheries in blue economy
Kochi: India’s leading marine experts will provide insights into the role of fisheries in the blue economy at the launch of a 5-day national training for young researchers at ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on Tuesday. Organised jointly by the CMFRI and Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), the training titled ‘Advancing India’s Blue Economy: Role of Fisheries Sector’ aims to equip participants with cutting edge knowledge and scientific practices for the sustainable utilisation of marine resources.
The inaugural session will feature expert talks on critical issues concerning the sector including technological advancements in resource utilisation, potential fishing advisories, physical oceanography, marine biodiversity, and the impact of climate change.
Dr. Balaji Ramakrishnan, Director of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, will inaugurate the event at 9:30 am. Dr. Grinson George, Director of CMFRI, will preside over the function. Eminent speakers including Dr. Satheesh Shenoi, former Director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and Dr. S. Prasanna Kumar, former Director of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) will address the gathering.
Shri Vivekananda Pai, Secretary General of VIBHA and Dr. Ratheesh Kumar Raveendran, coordinator of the training programme will speak.
The 5-day training will cover a range of topics including fisheries potential for blue economy; marine biodiversity; climate change and conservation; regional oceanography; and fisheries management in various sessions. As many as 20 participants, mostly PhD students, from across the country will attend the training.
A philatelic exhibition on marine life will be held on the sideline of the event.
