Srinagar: Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh announced significant progress in Jammu and Kashmir’s fisheries and livestock sectors, attributing the achievements to flagship schemes like the Blue Revolution, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Speaking at the Shalimar Convention Centre, he emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming rural livelihoods and ensuring nutritional security.
The Union Minister highlighted that milk production in J&K increased by 47%, from 19.50 lakh tonnes in 2014–15 to 28.74 lakh tonnes in 2023–24, raising per capita milk availability to 413 grams per day. He also noted a remarkable surge in trout production, which rose from 650 metric tonnes in 2020–21 to 2,380 metric tonnes in 2023–24, supported by the import of 13.4 lakh genetically improved eyed ova from Denmark.
Overall fish production grew from 20,000 MT in 2013–14 to 29,000 MT in 2024–25. The government has committed ₹300 crore under PMMSY for J&K, aimed at boosting infrastructure, production, and employment opportunities.
Earlier, at a high-level meeting in Srinagar co-chaired with J&K Chief Minister Shri Omar Abdullah, Shri Singh inaugurated a 50,000 litres-per-day Ultra High Temperature (UHT) Milk Processing Plant in Jammu. He stressed the need to engage youth in fisheries and livestock enterprises and announced plans for a ₹100-crore Integrated Aqua Park in J&K under PMMSY Phase-II.
Shri Singh reaffirmed the Centre’s dedication to empowering farmers, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and driving economic development to the grassroots.
