Kona Bay registers 14300 shrimp broodstock sales in June, plans to ship 15000 more in July-August

With a positive market response amid Covid 19 pandemic, Kona Bay ended up selling 14300 shrimp broodstock in India in the month of June. The Hawaii based shrimp broodstock company targets to dispatch 15000 more by the end of the month of August.

The unlocking of business activities had rekindled the hope of shrimp farmers. With the demand for shrimp products picking up, farmers are getting a good price. It encouraged farmers to increase stocking in the month of June.

“There was a good response in June. We have supplied broodstock to all major hatcheries. There is sufficient availability of shrimp broodstock now. We hope the demand will continue till September 2020,” said Hari Narayan Rao, Indian Technical Manager- Kona Bay.

However, the global pandemic has derailed the business activities. Commenting on the current business scenario, Rao said, “We cannot compensate the losses incurred during April-May. We will be able to recover 70% of the total businesses this year”.

Kona Bay has a major market share of 70% in Andhra Pradesh. The farmers who had gone for panic harvest during the months of April – May have started stocking, thereby propelling the demand till September.

While the domestic flight services have resumed operations after a gap of about two months, the international flight services continue to remain suspended till July 15. Since cases of Covid19 are increasing in the country, the resumption of international flight services will take some time or may start in a phased manner.

“If the international flight services remain suspended, we will continue shipping broodstock by special charted flights,” added Rao
