New Delhi, July 27: The Centre has approved a proposal to set up 50 Fish Farmers Producer Organizations (FFPOs) at a cost of Rs 24.50 crore to economically empower the fish farmers and enhance their bargaining power.
The consent was given under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya SampadaYojana (PMMSY) scheme
by the Department of Fisheries for 2020-21. The approval followed a proposal sent by the National Cooperative Development Corporation, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala said a written reply in Lok Sabha.
Approval has also been accorded during 2020-21 to the proposal of National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) for setting up of 22 FFPOs at total cost of Rs 10 crore under the PMMSY, he said.
Earlier, the Department of Fisheries through Small Farmers Agri-Business Consortium of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare had assisted setting up of 5 FFPOs in Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh on pilot basis under the erstwhile Centrally Sponsored Scheme Blue Revolution-Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries. All of them have already been registered.
The financial support provided under the PMMSY to each FFPOs primarily includes cost of formation and incubation, management, equity grant and training and skill development.
