Goa: Dr. Kanchan Sambhami, a Scientist at the Department of Biotechnology-sponsored Institute of Bioenergy at ICT (formerly UDCT) Mumbai, received the Dr. (Mrs.) N. J. Joseph and Prof. K. V. Jayachandran National award for the best PhD thesis in the Biological Oceanography category at a function in Goa. Dr. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director, National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, honoured the recipients with the award.
She completed her PHD thesis on the topic “Biochemical and Molecular Characterization of Sulphated Yielding Red Seaweed”, under the guidance of Prof. Vaibhav A. Mantri and Dr. Avinash Mishra, CSIR-CSMCRI in 2022. The SSR data generated by this study has great implications in marker-assisted strain selection, strain improvement as well as breeding experiments having implications in resource management and commercial farming.
OSICON25 conference hosted by leading academic/research institutes viz. Andhra University, Visakhapatnam; NIOT, Chennai; IITM, Pune; CSIR-NIO, Goa; NCESS, Thiruvananthapuram; CMLRE, Kochi; NCPOR, Goa and INCOIS, Hyderabad was very successful in bringing together 500 researchers, students and professionals working in the area of ocean sciences, technology and allied fields.
