The National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives Ltd (FISHCOPFED) had hailed the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampad Yojana (PMMSY) terming it as the biggest ever government spending in fisheries sector in the country.
The Union Cabinet has approved the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) – a scheme to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries sector in India under two components namely, Central Sector Scheme (CS) and Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) at a total estimated investment of Rs. 20,050 crore comprising of (i) Central share of Rs. 9,407 crore, (ii) State share of Rs. 4,880 crore and (iii) Beneficiaries’ share of Rs. 5,763 crore.
The Scheme will be implemented during a period of 5 years from FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25.
“It is a very good announcement. It will help increase the economic condition of farmers. However, everything depends on the timely allocation of fund. Also, the success of the programme depends on the implementation of the scheme at ground level”, said B K Mishra, MD, FISCOPFED
Mishra further added, “FISHCOPFED has a database of 30 lakh fishermen in the country. They can be supported during the crisis. Like PM Kishan, the Central Government may think of giving direct cash to fishers in the country. We are ready to help the government in the implementation of the scheme”.
