The Central government has today revised the fishing ban period in the East Coast from 15th April to 31st May 2020 and on the West Coast from 15th June to 31st July 2020. The Home Ministry had received several representations regarding revising the ban period in the current year in the wake of the Covid 19 lockdown.
Fishing activities have already been stopped from 24th March to 10th April 2020 due to the imposition of nationwide lockdown. The 61 days ban as imposed earlier on fishing activities would have affected the economic condition of fishermen.
Keeping the demands of fishermen in view, the Home Ministry has imposed 47 days ban on fishing by all fishing vessels in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) beyond the territorial waters on the East Coast including Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the West Coasts including Lakshadweep Islands for the conservation and effective management of fishery resources and also for sea safety reasons.
However, the traditional non-motorized units shall be exempted from this uniform fishing ban imposed in the Indian EEZ beyond territorial waters. The amendment in the period of uniform ban is applicable only for the current year and would not set any precedent for the future.
