New Delhi : The Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages (CRCFV) initiative, under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), aims to transform 100 coastal fishermen villages across India, including those in Karnataka, into climate-resilient hubs.
The initiative focuses on enhancing livelihood opportunities, improving fisheries infrastructure, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and developing these villages into attractive destinations for tourism and trade. Additionally, it aims to provide safety, modern fishing facilities, financial support, and entrepreneurship opportunities for local youth and women.
As part of this program, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, in consultation with the Karnataka government, has identified five coastal villages for development: Uppunda Madikal, Koteshwara, Kadekar, Bailuru, and Mattadahitlu. The project allocates 70% of funds for infrastructure development and 30% for fisheries-based economic activities.
A gap analysis conducted with the Karnataka government has outlined key initiatives such as multipurpose fisheries centers, high-mast lighting, fish vending kiosks, net mending yards, ice plants, cold storage units, fish drying yards, and shore protection measures. These efforts aim to enhance resilience against climate challenges while ensuring economic growth for local fishermen.
The number of villages covered under the CRCFV initiative is proportionate to the total number of coastal fishermen villages in each state, with no current plans to expand beyond the identified 100 villages.
This update was shared by Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri George Kurian, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on April 2, 2025.
