Kozhikode: Scarcity of industrial ice is one of the main reasons for the contamination of fish. State government officials in Kerala have destroyed 3.5 tonnes of contaminated fish in Kozhikode district over the past few weeks.
Food safety officials reduced their jobs in fish market after the outbreak of Covid 19. But whenever they go out for inspection, quintals of contaminated fishes are destroyed.
Only a few ice factories are operating in the district owing to the nationwide lockdown. Fresh fish has to be stored in sub-zero temperatures before it reaches to the consumer. Thus, vendors find it difficult to find ice.
